The breath of life
Genesis 2:7 "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
The Bible tells us in this verse that God formed the body of Adam out of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the “breath of life,” and Adam became a living soul. That is to say, without that breath of life, Adam was only a lifeless body without a soul. It was this breath of life that imparts life into Adam, and he became a living soul. Jesus tells us in this verse:
John 6:63 "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life."
Without the breath of life, Adam was only a lifeless body. It is the spirit that “quickeneth,” and the flesh profiteth nothing: the flesh did not have a life of its own. It is the spirit that imparts life into the flesh through the soul. Therefore, according to this verse, the spirit that quickeneth is the breath of life by which Adam became a living soul. Moreover, the breath of life is not just in Adam:
Genesis 6:17 "And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die."
Genesis 7:15 "And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life."
Genesis 7:22 "All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died."
These three verses tell us that the breath of life is also in every living creature which went into Noah’s ark, and which perished in the flood when it erupted out of nowhere and destroyed the whole earth. Genesis 2:7 tells us that God breathed into Adam the breath of life and he became a living soul, in the same way, all creatures in whose nostrils was the breath of life also have souls in them: animals have souls. Genesis 7:22 tells us that the breath of life was in the “nostrils” of every creature that went into the ark. Job tells us in this verse:
Job 27:3 "All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;"
This goes to show that the spirit of God is the breath of life by which we have life in our lifeless bodies. Jesus tells us in:
John 6:63 "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life."
The spirit that quickeneth (the breath of life) is “the words that I speak unto you.” Solomon tells us in:
Proverbs 1:23 "Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you."
Words and spirit cannot be decoupled one from the other, just like how our spirit, soul and body is one and cannot be decoupled one from another. Moreover, words are the physical form of a spirit, invisible but discernible. Embedded in physical words is the spirit. Embedded in every word of God in the 66 books of the Holy Bible is the Spirit of God. That’s how when a sinner received the gospel, the words which he received was able to quicken him from death unto life.
It goes back to the beginning, in Genesis 2:7 when God breathed the breath of life into Adam’s nostrils, and he became a living soul. A living soul means a soul which is alive, and a body which is alive is evidenced by that soul living in us. It is the words of the LORD (breath of life) that imparts life to the soul, and it is the soul that gives life to the body.
Zechariah 12:1 "The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him."
This verse tells us that the “spirit of man” has a form. God was the one who formeth the spirit of man within a man, and everything that has a form also has substance. We read in:
Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
This verse tells us that faith has a substance, and faith being a fruit of the Spirit of God, as in:
Galatians 5:22-23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
Inside a fruit are seeds. Within the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. Luke 8:11 tells us that “The seed is the word of God.” Therefore, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance are faithful replicas of the original word that was sown in the good ground of “an honest and good heart” (Luke 8:15). Their genetic substance were faithfully duplicated and copied over from the original word of God to a born again believer in the form of a seed.
Psalms 139:16 "Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them."
God’s eyes can see our “substance,” yet being unperfect. Within a book are words or written instructions, and science has established that our DNA is a “book” which contains the instructions for "building" of a human being. Those instructions are inscribed in the structure of the DNA molecule through a genetic code, similar to the programming code of a software, or the procedures written in a book: "… in thy BOOK all my members were written."
Where did those genetic instructions come from? Who authored the “book” by which all our members in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them? David by inspiration of the Holy Ghost tells us that God was the Author of that book. He was the one who wrote the genetic instructions by which we came into existence. He was the one who formeth the spirit of man in us. Genesis 2:7 tells us that God was the one who breathed the breath of life into Adam and he became a living soul.
