The finger of God
The phrase "the finger of God" is found 4 times in the 1611 King James Bible. The first time this phrase was mentioned was in:
Exodus 8:19 "Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said."
The context of this verse was in the time of Exodus, when Moses and Aaron confronted the Pharaoh according to the words of the LORD "Let my people go", only to be met with the Pharaoh's refusal. Then, according to the words of the LORD by Moses, Aaron stretched out his rod and smote the dust of the land, bringing forth lice throughout the land of Egypt. The Pharaoh's magicians tried to duplicate God's miracle with their enchantments but failed to do so. Hence, in Exodus 8:19, they said, "this is the finger of God", referring to a miracle of God which they could not achieve by their own earthly wisdom.
Luke 11:19-20 "And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. 20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you."
In Luke 11:20, Jesus cast out devils with the finger of God. Similar to the scene in Exodus as mentioned above, casting out devils from a man’s body “with the finger of God” is also a miracle that no man could attain unto. Jesus publicly did so with “the finger of God”, in the witnesses of many men. Recall in:
Exodus 8:18 "... the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not."
In this, they were attempting to do what only God could do. They were trying to counterfeit "the finger of God" with their enchantments (i.e. it was in their hearts to counterfeit what God could do that man could not). The phrase "finger of God" was also found in:
Exodus 31:18 "And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God."
The two stone tables of testimony were written with the finger of God and given to Moses. The same event was also described in Deuteronomy 9:10, with more details provided:
Deuteronomy 9:10 "And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly."
Today, we see the spirit of counterfeit both in the miracles of God as well as the words of the LORD. There are Christians who claim to have the finger of God that allows them to cast devils out from a person’s body, heal sicknesses, or even raise the dead back to life! There are also Christians who claim encounters with the finger of God in the sense where God supposedly spoke to them by the "Holy Spirit" and gave them new words, new commandments, dreams or even prophecies of things that are not found in the 66 books of the Holy Bible.
Revelation 22:18-19 "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book."
According to Revelation 22:18-19, have these men who claimed experiential encounter with the finger of God “added unto” or “taken away” from the words of the LORD in the 66 books of the Holy Bible? We often find these things happening in Charismatic Churches among other cult groups.
We will usually find some form of "enchantments" in these churches too which they hold sacred. For example, the Roman Catholic Church have their idols, prayer beads and holy water; the Charismatic Church have their "tongues" which resemble chanting (note: “chant” is a syllable in the term “enchantment”); the Seventh Adventist Church have "The Inspiration and Authority of the Ellen G. White Writings" which they view as a thing that came from the finger of God; the Mormons too, have their "Book of Mormon", "Doctrine and Covenants", and the "Pearl of Great Price" which they also regard as things that came from the finger of God.
