What is “walking with God?”
John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
Our daily walk with God must begin with "the way." Jesus is "the way," but he is also "the truth." One cannot be decoupled from the other. So, to walk in "the way," it must necessarily be knowledge of “the way” according to scripture.
Proverbs 6:23 "For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:"
“The way of life” begins with knowledge of God’s commandment and law (the truth). Apart from "the truth," we cannot know "the way" because it is “the truth” that tells us “the way,” and without knowledge of "the way," there is no eternal life.
Matthew 7:13-14 "¶ Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."
According to Jesus, "the way" is a strait and narrow way, and few there be that find it. Just like "the truth," it is either "the truth," or it's not "the truth." It is either "the way," or it's not "the way." If it’s not “the truth,” then it’s not “the way” to God. There is no in-between, and every word of God is the way to God.
Ephesians 4:14 "That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;"
What saith the LORD? What saith the 66 books of the Holy Bible? In our daily walk with God, this should be the kind of questions we should be asking when someone comes to us with a doctrine, because it is going to land us on a journey that will either take us to the wide gate and broad way that leadeth to destruction (and many there be which go in thereat), or the strait gate and narrow way which leadeth unto life (and few there be that find it). If it’s not “the truth,” then it’s not “the way of life,” and we ought to repent and go back to the word of God for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16).
"If there has been no walking with God down here there will be no dwelling with God up there. Death effects no vital change to the heart. If one does not hate sin and love holiness before death, he certainly will not do so afterwards." — Arthur Pink, “The Scriptures and Good Works”
That hit me like a ton of bricks a couple years ago. I've always thought that whatever belief one has in God is fine. Tibetan monks, indigenous folks, Buddhists, etc. But to be a Christian, you must believe in what Christ said: John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." I must therefore believe that Christ is indeed the only way!
