What is an evil eye? Jesus tells us in this verse:
Matthew 20:15 "Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?"
Notice the question that Jesus asked “Is thine eye evil, because I am good?” An evil eye cannot look at something good and call it good. Rather, it will look at something good and call it evil, just like what Isaiah tells us in this verse:
Isaiah 5:20 "¶ Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!"
An evil eye will call evil good, and good evil. What is good, and what is evil? Jesus asked the question in Matthew 20:15 “Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own?” The law of God defines for us what is good, and what is evil. What the law calls good, it is good, and what the law calls evil, it is evil. That is what an evil eye could not see. Something happened to mankind in the garden of Eden, after Adam and Eve took from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil:
Genesis 3:5 "For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."
Isaiah 5:21 "Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!"
Since the fall of man in Genesis 3 when his eyes has been opened to know good and evil, he has been wise in his own eyes, and prudent in his own sight. The law of God is no longer binding to him because of his evil eye, just like what the three friends of Job calls him in Job 32:1 "… because he was righteous in his own eyes." Man is now righteous in his own eyes. He no longer has any regard for the law of God. Paul further reveals to us:
2 Corinthians 4:4 "In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."
Notice the word “blinded?” That was Paul telling us that our mind is actually an eye, and this is confirmed by Solomon in Ecclesiastes 2:14 “The wise man’s eyes are in his head…” It is not physical eyes that Solomon was referring to, but the mind according to Paul. This verse further tells us that the little-g god of this world (Satan) hath blinded the minds of them that believed not. Blinded from what? Paul tells us they are blinded from the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ, and those would be men who are righteous in their own eyes: men who are wise in their own eyes and prudent in their own sight. Solomon tells us:
Ecclesiastes 2:14 "The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all."
Solomon calls men who are righteous in their own eyes, “the fool” and he further tells us that they walketh in darkness. In the words of Isaiah 5:20, they have “put darkness for light, and light for darkness.” Since the fall of mankind in Genesis 3, when the eyes of his mind have been opened to know good and evil, he no longer needs the law of the LORD to tell him what is good and what is evil. He is now wise in his own eyes, and prudent in his own sight. His eyes are now evil because Satan hath blinded his mind by the turning of things upside down:
Isaiah 29:15-16 "Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us? 16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter’s clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?"
The keyword to note in this passage of scripture is “turning of things upside down.” That is the Devil substituting evil for good, and good for evil; putting darkness for light, and light for darkness; and putting bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter. The truth has been hijacked and made to appear like a lie. Solomon tells us in Proverbs 12:15 "The way of a fool is right in his own eyes…" That means man’s righteousness comes from his own eyes. Unlike the righteousness of a born again believer which comes from “the truth,” every word of God he has received in his heart, the righteousness of a natural man comes from a version of “the truth” he has received from the little-g god of this world. Recall what Jesus tells us in:
Luke 5:31-32 "And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. 32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
Notice the term “the righteous?” Those would be men who are righteous in their own eyes, whose righteousness proceed from what they see as “good,” but not according to the law of the LORD. In fact, the law of the LORD would pronounce what they call good as evil and what they call evil as good. Yet, these people whose heart is waxed gross, and whose ears are dull of hearing, and whose eyes are blinded could not receive what the law of God calls good as good, and what the law of God calls evil as evil.
Matthew 13:14-15 "And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them."
Hearing they shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing they shall see, and shall not perceive. That’s what an evil eye, the mind which the little-g god of this world hath blinded, will do to the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ. Their evil eye will turn the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ upside down, calling good evil and evil good, putting darkness for light and light for darkness, bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. These people who are wise in their own eyes and prudent in their own sight would much rather depend on their own righteousness than to repent from their evil ways and be converted, that Jesus should heal them. The word “convert” can also be found in this verse:
Psalms 19:7 "The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple."
Healing comes with conversion, and it is by the law of the LORD that the soul is converted. Healing in the context of Matthew 13:14-15 means that the eyes are no longer blind that they should not see; and that the ears are no longer dull that they should not hear; and that the heart is no longer waxed gross that it should not understand. Taken collectively, the eyes, the ears and the heart of a born again believer is now the “mind of Christ” according to this passage of scripture:
1 Corinthians 2:14-16 "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ."
Spiritual things must be spiritually discerned. The mind of a natural man is blind because the little-g god of this world has turned the things of the Spirit of God upside down, so that they appear to be foolishness unto him. A spiritual man, on the other hand, is capable of discerning spiritual things because he has the “mind of Christ” by which he may be instructed by the Spirit of God: his eyes are no longer blind, his ears are no longer dull, and his heart is no longer waxed gross. Jesus has healed him the day when his soul was converted by the law of the LORD.
2 Timothy 1:7 "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."
A “sound mind” belongs to a born again believer whose blindness has been healed. God has given him the “mind of Christ” by which he is now capable of receiving the things of the Spirit of God, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. His eyes are no longer blind, and his ears no longer dull, and his heart is no longer waxed gross. He could now put good for good, and evil for evil by the law of the LORD. No longer blinded by the little-g god of this world. The scribes and Pharisees were “blind” because their minds have been blinded by the little-g god of this world:
Matthew 23:16-19 "Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?… 19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?"
They were natural men pretending to be men of God. They were blind not because they could not see with their physical eyes, but because they were blinded in the mind, being wise in their own eyes and prudent in their own sight. Their evil eyes could not see the good as good and evil as evil according to the law of the LORD. In this example, notice how they put the gold before the temple; and the gift as greater in value than the altar that sanctifieth it. That is the turning of things upside down according to Isaiah 29:16. They were not just fools and blind, but were also blind guides: they taught others to do the same, putting stumbling blocks in their path. Another thing to note is their love of money, how they value the gold and the gift before the temple and the altar. Solomon tells us in this verse:
Proverbs 28:22 "He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him."
That would be the scribes and Pharisees who put the gold and the gift before the temple and the altar. They were not just greedy, but they also won’t consider the truth of the matter: whether the gold or the temple, or the gift or the altar, which of the two is more important and greater in value. They have no regard for the truth, “the truth” being a reference to Jesus Christ in John 14:6 and the written word of God in 2 Timothy 2:15. That’s why Jesus said in Matthew 15:8, referring to the scribes and the Pharisees, “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.” Their heart is not only far from Jesus, but is also far from the word of God. The law of the LORD means nothing to them, except when it is used as a tool to deceive others. Their evil eye won’t see good for good, and evil for evil according to the law of the LORD.
Proverbs 27:20 "Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied."
The “eyes of man” are never satisfied. That would be a reference to an evil eye. An evil eye is always coveting after something, just like how the scribes and Pharisees coveted after the gold and the gift that people offered in the temple. Paul tells us in 1 Timothy 6:10 that “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith…” Notice the words “coveted after” in this verse? To covet after something would be to desire after something. That would be the love of money. Yet, to an evil eye, the money will never be enough. He is always looking for more money and more. That’s why Jesus posted the question:
Matthew 16:26 "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?"
An evil eye is never satisfied. He wants to gain the whole world even at the expense of his own eternity. To him, the mammon is his master, not the God of the Holy Bible. His hope is in the mammon, not the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ. There is no fear of the LORD restraining him. That’s why he is not afraid to do evil. The root of all evil is the love of money, just like what Job tells us in Job 15:34 "For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery." The writer of Job calls an evil eye hypocrites, just like how Jesus calls the scribes and Pharisees hypocrites in Matthew 23. Job further tells us that these hypocrites will take bribes. Just like how Judas Escariot sold Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, an evil eye can be bribed. The love of money will propel him to betray the truth for money. An evil eye will trade the truth for money. He would rather gain the whole world than to lose his own soul. In fact, that is what we see with many celebrities and politicians who sold their souls for money.
Notice how these celebrities and politicians made the symbol of an evil eye bearing the pattern of the number ‘666’ in public? It is no coincidence. They have sold their souls to the little-g god of this world who gave them the power, the money and the celebrity statuses they wanted, and in turn use them as tools to externalize his spiritual kingdom on earth. The Devil is after something, and we know from Revelation 13:18 that the False Prophet will cause the whole world to receive the mark of the beast in their right hand or in their foreheads. The number of the beast is ‘666.’ BTW, all forms of the word “eye” are found exactly 636 times in the 1611 King James Bible, and the number 636 = 600 + (6 x 6) bears the pattern of the number ‘666.’
