Giants and the sons of God
I had some Christians raving mad at me when I challenged them to show me from scripture that "giants" both before and after the Great Flood were just very large human beings. According to these Christians, giants came from the ungodly lineage of Cain through the daughters of men who married the sons of Seth. Later on, their genes were passed down through the wives of Shem, Ham and Japheth after the Flood. Where did they get that idea from? Which chapter or which verses??
The Bible tells us:
Genesis 6:1-4 "And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."
Notice that the Bible is giving us the definition of the word "giant" in this passage of scripture "when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them." The Bible is also clear that there were giants in the earth BEFORE the Great Flood, and also AFTER that.
How were "giants" like physically?
Numbers 13:33 "And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight."
The sons of Anak did not come directly from the “sons of God” and daughters of men, but were descended from the giants. Notice the term “the giants” in this verse? It tells us that the sons of Anak were a people, not random individuals. Also, these sons of Anak were physically very large, much larger than a normal person.
Deuteronomy 2:10-20 "The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emims... (That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;"
The Emims were a people, the Zamzummims were a people, just like the Anakims were. Giants were a people, a nation: not an individual or random individuals.
Deuteronomy 3:11 "For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man."
Like the sons of Anak, Og king of Bashan was a remnant of the giants. Notice the size of his bedstead: 9 cubits x 4 cubits, or 4.11m x 1.82m. Og himself could be about 12 feet or 3.66m tall.
1 Samuel 17:4 "¶ And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span."
Like Og king of Bashan, Goliath was a remnant of the giants, a distant offspring of the sons of God and the daughters of men. Notice the pattern of number ‘666’ in this passage of scripture about him? Goliath was a figure of the beast which number is ‘666’ (Revelation 13:18).
1 Chronicles 20:6 "And yet again there was war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the giant."
This son of a giant was a brother of Goliath. He had six fingers and six toes on each hand and foot. Goliath himself was six cubits and a span (2.97m) tall. Goliath's spear head alone was 600 shekels of iron (6.8kg). Normal spear head weighs about 0.5kg at most. Goliath's coat of mail was 5000 shekels of brass. Brass is about 10% heavier than iron, so 5000 shekels of brass is about 62kg. Goliath was a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, definitely not a weakling. On top of the coat of mail and the spear, Goliath also carried a helmet of brass, greaves of brass on his legs, a target of brass between his shoulders, a sword, and a shield. Giants were physically very strong.
Job 16:14 "He breaketh me with breach upon breach, he runneth upon me like a giant."
This verse tells us how giants kill people: by running upon them and killing them with their immense strength, size and weight. Giants were huge: their dimensions and mass were a weapon they use to kill and destroy.
Amos 2:9 "Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath."
This Amorite was a giant, and the Bible tells us just how big he was: a typical cedar tree is about 15m tall. Not only was this Amorite very tall, he was also very strong according to this verse.
Sons of Seth = sons of God?
Hebrews 1:5 "For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?"
I’ve come across many Christians who insist that the “sons of God” in Genesis 6:1-4 were really the sons of Seth and not angelic beings. They like to use Hebrews 1:5 “For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son…” to justify their position. Hebrews 1:5 is a reference to:
Psalms 2:7 "I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee."
Notice the word “begotten” in both verses? Therefore Hebrews 1:5 is about the LORD Jesus Christ, not any son of God. The Son of God is not an angel, but God the Son himself, and the King James Bible translators were also careful to capitalize the word “Son” in both Hebrews 1:5 and Psalms 2:7. Of course, that is a title that only the LORD Jesus Christ can carry: no angels or any other created beings are worthy of this title.
Luke 3:38 "Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God."
Adam was a son of God (not Son of God) because just like angels, he was a created being. However, even though man was created a little lower than angels, God made him special because no other created beings were made in the image and the likeness of God. Not only that, but God has crowned man with glory and honour, and the word "crowned" is a reference to kingship and dominion. In the resurrection to come, every born again believer will receive a new body, like the body of the resurrected Christ.
John 1:12 "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:"
Christians who insist that the sons of God are the sons of Seth also like to use this verse to support their arguments. They blatantly assume that every son of Seth were born again believers, when in the end, only Noah and his family were saved. In fact, Peter called those sons of Seth who perished in the Great Flood “the ungodly” in 2 Peter 2:5. Contrast that with Noah (also a son of Seth) in the same verse whom Peter called “a preacher of righteousness.” If God had indeed received every son of Seth as sons, then he is a respecter of person. Of course, we know he is not (Acts 10:34).
Who were the “sons of God” in Genesis 6:1-4?
To answer this question, I would like to start off with:
Psalms 82:6-7 "I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. 7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes."
Luke 20:36 "Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection."
The psalmist tells us in Psalms 82:6-7 that the little-g gods are “children of the most High,” and they are immortals, but they shall die like men at some point. Jesus tells us in Luke 20:36 that born again believers shall be equal unto the angels, and they shall not die anymore, being the “children of God” (little-g gods).
Deuteronomy 17:3 "And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;"
This verse tells us that the sun, the moon or any of the host of heaven (stars) are little-g gods.
Genesis 32:1-2 "And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim."
This verse tells us that angels of God are God’s host. Therefore, the sun, the moon, and the stars of heaven are angels or little-g gods, and it was forbidden unto the children of Israel that they should serve or worship them.
Job 38:7 "When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?"
Job linked the “morning stars” to the “sons of God” in this verse.
Revelation 22:16 "I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star."
Jesus referred to himself as the “bright an morning star” in this verse, and he is the “Son of God” (capitalized ‘S‘).
Isaiah 14:12 "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!"
Lucifer (Satan) was called “son of the morning” because he was a “son of God.” This verse is also a reference to:
Luke 10:18 "And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven."
Satan shall “fall from heaven” (as a star), in the same way Lucifer will be cut down to the ground (as a tree).
Revelation 9:1 "And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit."
Here, the Bible ascribes a star to a person (“to him”), which according to Isaiah 14:12 and Luke 10:18, is Satan.
Judges 5:20 "They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera."
Interesting how Barak was helped by “stars” when he fought against Sisera. The stars that helped Barak were living entities: he was helped by the “sons of God” (or angels).
Job 1:6 "Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them."
Job 2:1 "Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD."
Satan was an angelic being and notice he was among the other sons of God who came to present themselves before the LORD. The word “among” implies that Satan possess like qualities as the other sons of God. Satan’s five-point plan:
Isaiah 14:13-14 "For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High."
Notice in point [2] Satan wants to exalt his throne above the “stars of God?” The word “throne” speaks of authority: Satan wants to rule over other “sons of God” (angelic beings).
Daniel 8:10 "And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them."
The context of this verse was a war which took take place in the spiritual realm. This is another place which tells us that “host of heaven” = “stars.” Previously, we have learned that stars are angels or “sons of God.”
2 Corinthians 4:4 "In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."
Paul refers to Satan as the “god of this world” in this verse. Earlier, we have established that little-g gods are angelic beings, and they are also “host of heaven” (Deuteronomy 17:3), or “God’s host” (Genesis 32:3).
Luke 2:13-15 "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us."
Again, the same idea is reverberated in this passage of scripture: Angels are “heavenly host,” and here, they were praising God just like how the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy (Job 38:7).
Psalms 147:4 "He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names."
Hebrews 12:22 "But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,"
Every star has a name, and God knows each and every star by his name. There are also an innumerable number of stars in heaven, the same as there are an “innumerable company of angels.” Finally,
Genesis 6:1-4 "And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
This passage tells us that the “sons of God” (stars, little-g gods, angels, host of heaven) saw that the daughters of men were beautiful and they took them wives all of which they chose. As a result of their union, giants were born unto them, and the Bible is clear that there were giants before and after the great flood of Genesis. Goliath himself was descended from giants (2 Samuel 21:19; 1 Chronicles 20:5), which in turn came from the sons of God and the daughters of men.
Job 4:18 "Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:"
God charged his angels with folly. What is “folly?”
Genesis 34:7 "And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it : and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done."
According to this verse, when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite took Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and slept with her, he had wrought “folly” in Israel. This is the same as the sons of God (stars, little-g gods, angels, host of heaven) who took wives of the daughters of men, and through their unholy union, produced “giants” in the earth. There is nothing said about the sons of Seth being forbidden to take wives of the daughters of Cain in scripture, but in Job 4:18, it is clear that God charged his angels with folly.
