Is there such thing as a flat earth?
I know there are some in my friends list who believe in a "flat earth." I don't, and am not persuaded by the arguments they presented to prove that the earth is flat. In this post, I will be sharing some of the reasons why.
As a start, I would like to share some of my thoughts on the flat earth issue:
Job 26:7 "He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing."
The earth hangs upon nothing, but so does the sun, the moon and all the host of heaven (stars), all of which are spherical bodies. There is not a single exception, every single planet has a spherical body. In fact, we are told to look up and behold all the host of heaven, and consider the handywork that God hath made.
Psalms 19:1 "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork."
Job 38:31-33 "Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? 32 Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons? 33 Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?"
None of these masterpieces of God are in the form of a flat object. Why? Because a sphere is dimensionally the most stable shape in the universe, capable of being equally pulled from all sides, whereas a flat circle cannot. If the earth is really flat, it would have been broken into many pieces long time ago. Don’t you think so?
Job 38:4 "Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding."
Some people claim that this verse shows that the earth is a flat body supported on foundations, which they say are "pillars" according to Job 9:6. Well, according to Job 26:7, the earth is hanging upon "nothing," which means that “nothing” is the thing that is really supporting the whole earth, just like nothing is the thing that the sun, the moon and all the host of heaven are hanging upon. Also, Job 9:6 did not say the earth is rested upon "pillars." Did it?
Job 38:12-15 "Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place; 13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? 14 It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment. 15 And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken."
Some people like to use the verse "It is turned as clay to the seal" from Job 38:12-15 to justify the Flat Earth theory. The context of this passage is about God who spoke to Job out of the whirlwind. So, when God asked Job this question:
Job 38:12-13 "Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place; 13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?"
The answer is of course 'No'. Job was just a man. How could he command the morning since his days, neither could he cause the dayspring to know his place. Notice the word “dayspring?” This is a reference to:
Luke 1:78 "... whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us"
From this verse, we know that the "dayspring" in Job 38:12 is a reference to our Lord Jesus Christ, who is also "the bright and morning star" in Revelation 22:16. It all makes sense. So according to Job 38:12-13, Jesus will be the one who shall take hold of the "ends of the earth," that the wicked might be shaken out of it.
Psalms 135:7 "He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries."
This verse tells us that vapours ascend from the "ends of the earth."
Job 28:24 "For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;"
According to Job 28:24, the ends of the earth is everything within the bounds of the earth under the whole heaven. That would be the entire surface of the earth. It is not the borders of the earth that flat-earthers claim, and if we apply this understanding to Psalms 135:7, that would be entire the surface of the earth where evaporation is constantly taking place in a water-cycle.
Ecclesiastes 1:7 "All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again."
God continues in verse 14 and 15:
Job 38:14-15 "It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment. 15 And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken."
The whole earth would be turned as clay to the seal. What does the a seal do to a lump of clay? What is a seal?
Esther 8:8 "Write ye also for the Jews, as it liketh you, in the king’s name, and seal it with the king’s ring: for the writing which is written in the king’s name, and sealed with the king’s ring, may no man reverse."
According to Esther 8:8, the king’s ring is a seal. What happen when a seal stamps upon a lump of clay? Isn’t it going to flatten that lump of clay? That is also to say, that the earth (clay) was NOT flat, but the day will come when God is going to flatten it, and the wicked of the earth will also be flatten, so that they stand (flat) as a garment (Job 38:14).
Proverbs 8:25-31 "Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: 26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. 27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: 28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: 29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: 30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; 31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men."
This passage starts with “wisdom” telling us that God had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. Then she goes on to say that “When he (God) prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth…” Link this back to Genesis:
Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."
In the first 10 words of the Holy Bible, God shows us the sequence of Creation: Time → Space → Matter. Without Time, Space cannot exist, and without Space, Matter cannot exist. Proverbs 8:27 also echoed that sequence. Therefore, “When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:” that was a reference to the earth.
Isaiah 40:22 "It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:"
Isaiah 40:22 used the words “circle of the earth.” God literally drew a circle “upon the face of the depth,” (Proverbs 8:27) which means that the earth is circular. However, unlike how we draw circles upon the surface of a paper with a pair of compass, God drew that circle in a three-dimensional (Length, Breadth, Depth) empty space, that is to say, the earth MUST be circular whether we look from the length-wise direction, the breadth-wise direction, or the depth-wise direction.
Genesis 1:27 "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."
Our image is a two-dimensional reflection of us. God created man in his own image, and man is a three-dimensional being. In fact, all of God’s creation have a three-dimensional form. The evidence of how the earth look like is as clear as how God also did the same with the sun, the moon and the host of heaven. When God set a compass upon the face of the depth, he was actually drawing a circular three-dimensional object: a sphere. So, if God drew a three-dimensional earth as how we would draw a two-dimensional circle, that means that God is a higher dimensional being in a higher-dimensional realm.
Ephesians 3:17-19 "That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God."
According to Apostle Paul, the fourth dimension is “height.”
Psalms 8:5-6 "For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. 6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:"
Man was made “a little lower than the angels,” and if man is on the earth, that means that angels which were made higher than man, are in a higher place.
Job 22:12 "Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!"
Job tells us that God is in the “height of heaven” and he goes on to say that stars, a reference to angels, are also in the “height,” the fourth dimension.
Isaiah 14:12-14 "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High."
This passage is Lucifer, the Devil, who wants to be like God. In this passage, Isaiah gives us a glimpse of where the “height of heaven” is:
above the stars of God (angels);
mountain in the sides of the north;
above the heights of the cloud.
Ephesians 6:12 "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
Paul also tells us that there are “spiritual wickedness in high places.” This verse tells us that there are “evil angels” (Psalms 78:49) operating against mankind, operating from the fourth dimension, in “high places,” where our flesh and blood being cannot perceive.
1 Corinthians 2:14 "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."
Though unseen by the eye, there is a fierce battle raging on for the souls of men on earth. But until our eyes are open to the written word of God, we will never perceive this reality, which is more real than our physical existence, but "... whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her." (Ecclesiastes 7:26) One of the lies of the enemy is the “flat earth theory.” It is called a theory because no one can conclusively prove it from scripture. If the enemy can stir you up enough to get you believe in their lies, the lies can get you to where the enemy wants you to be.
